How to block sites using the HOSTS file in Windows Vista:
1. Turn off UAC (User Account Control) if it is turned on. You can do this by going into the Control Panel -> Users -> User Account Control. After disabling UAC, you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
2. Open CMD. Open the Start Menu and click on Run. Type CMD in the field.
3. Type: Notepad C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/HOSTS
4. In the HOSTS file, do NOT remove anything there.
5. Type: 127.0.0.1 and then your Web address to block. For multiple addresses, use another "line" in the file by pressing Enter.
6. It is best to type in all three, seperate forms, and one for the complete (http://www.)[*] URL. Example: "http" "www" "normal" and one for http://www.[*]
Once done, save the HOSTS file by opening the file tab in the window, and by clicking Save. Close the HOSTS file, and turn UAC back on.
Restart your computer.
